Web hits 100 million websites!

Today I read an article about a company (Net Craft) who has been tracking the web and they now estimate there are 100 million websites online. It started its counter in 1995 with about 18,000 and last reported in May 2004 with a number of 50 million.

And now, just over 2 years later the number of websites has doubled!

This huge growth I am sure is due to in part to the social networking phenomenon that has taken off - with blogs, my space and you tube. The web is definitely changing the way we think and act with many social networking sites sitting on the top 10 visited websites.

It is no wonder forward thinking companies like google.com are eating it up, recently buying youtube for 1.6 billion!

But I think it caught us all off guard at how fast it has grown including Bill Gates, who in 1993 said: "The Internet? We are not interested in it."
